Introducing Our Camp Director

Michael Tate administrates the Mission’s Camp Bennett facility and directs the children’s summer camp program. Michael previously served as the director of youth and Christian education at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Virginia Beach, VA. In addition to his youth ministry, Michael also directed a Mathnasium center teaching supplementary math to first grade through college-age students. Before that, he was director of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation program for the Department of the Navy in Norfolk, VA.

In 1934, out of compassion for orphaned and poor children, the Women’s Guild of Central Union Mission determined to create a summer camp. Raising $11,000 through concerts by Homer Rodeheaver, famed music leader for the evangelist Billy Sunday, they purchased a Brookeville, Maryland, farm and dedicated it to Christian service.

The property was named Camp Bennett in honor of John and Jean Bennett, Central Union Mission’s first long-term superintendent and his wife. Since then, besides children’s summer camp, Camp Bennett has been used as a working farm for unemployed men, a temporary children’s home, support during World War II and for rehabilitation and retreat for men experiencing homelessness.

Camp Bennett Christian Ministry Center is part of the Central Union Mission family of properties and programs, which has provided Christian-based services to the Washington, DC, metropolitan area for over 135 years.

Idyllic Camp Bennett Christian Ministry Center is a lushly wooded multi-use facility available for rental in Brookeville, Maryland. Easily accessible from locations throughout the Washington and Baltimore area, Camp Bennett is perfect for Christian conferences, retreats, banquets, youth groups, camps, team-building, sporting events and other church activities.

For seven weeks during the summer, Camp Bennett is a sleep-away camp for children whose families are experiencing poverty. They have an often first-time experience in the woods, where they go swimming and boating, do crafts, make friends and learn about Jesus. Camp Bennett Christian Ministry Center also serves as a respite for men experiencing homelessness who are participating in Central Union Mission’s spiritual, educational and employment programs.
